WHAT DOES IT MEAN...?

Chi dorme non piglia pesci

Literally translated this phrase in English is “Who sleeps doesn’t catch fish.” Metaphorically of course, this proverb refers to opportunities missed (fish not caught) because one is some other non-productive activity (such as sleeping). The closest English equivalent is the saying “You snooze, you lose.”

The message in “Chi dorme non piglia pesci is also echoed in the English proverb, “The early bird gets the worm.”

Un buon investigatore deve essere capace di costruire una storia, immaginare che cosa è successo prima e dopo il crimine, come in un romanzo. Poi, costruita la storia, deve andare in cerca di ciò che la conferma e la contraddice. Così pensa il maresciallo dei carabinieri Pietro Fenoglio, piemontese trapiantato a Bari, che si trova a indagare su un omicidio dove tutto appare troppo chiaro fin dall'inizio. Non fosse che al principale sospettato, su cui si concentra ogni indizio, mancava qualsiasi movente per commettere il delitto.

A good investigator must be able to build a story, imagine what happened before and after the crime, like in a novel. Then, built the story, must go in search of what confirms and contradicts it.                                       MAY IN ITALY

1 maggio. La Festa dei lavoratori.

In tutta Italia si organizzano eventi, incontri e manifestazioni per celebrare questa importante festa. Uno degli eventi simbolo della Festa dei Lavoratori è sicuramente il famoso Concertone del Primo Maggio di Roma, ad ingresso gratuito, a cui partecipano numerosi cantanti e personaggi dello spettacolo. L’evento da tradizione si svolge in Piazza San Giovanni in Laterano. Anche nelle altre principali città italiane, per celebrare La Festa del Primo Maggio, si organizzano concerti, spettacoli, manifestazioni, visite gratuite ai musei e siti archeologici e numerose altre attività.

Throughout Italy events, meetings and demonstrations are organized to celebrate this important holiday. One of the emblematic events of the Workers' Day is certainly the famous Concertone of the May Day in Rome, free entry, which many singers and characters of the show participate. The event traditionally takes place in Piazza San Giovanni in Laterano. Also in other major Italian cities, to celebrate the May Day Festival, concerts, shows, events, free visits to museums and archaeological sites and many other activities are organized.

11 maggio. Festa della mamma.

In Italia la seconda domenica di maggio si celebra la Festa della Mamma, un giorno speciale per tutti noi. La festa della mamma ha origine nell’antichità. In Grecia si organizzavano grandi feste floreali in onore della dea Rea, considerata la madre di tutte le divinità. A Roma, i Matronalia venivano celebrati all’inizio della primavera per onorare la nascita della città, la rinascita della natura, le madri e la fertilità. La festa della mamma come la conosciamo oggi è stata ufficializzata in Italia dal Parlamento italiano nel 1959 nella data dell’8 maggio. Nel 2000, però, la data venne spostata alla seconda domenica del mese di maggio.

Mother’s Day is celebrated in Italy on the second Sunday of May, a special day for all of us. Mother’s Day originated in ancient times. In Greece, great floral festivals were organized in honour of the goddess Rhea, considered the mother of all gods. In Rome, the Matronalia were celebrated at the beginning of spring to honor the birth of the city, the rebirth of nature, mothers and fertility. Mother’s Day as we know it today was made official in Italy by the Italian Parliament in 1959 on 8 May. In 2000, however, the date was moved to the second Sunday of May. 

ITALIAN CINEMA 

 "L’isola degli idealisti" è un film tratto dal romanzo di Giorgio Scerbanenco che, scritto nel 1942, andò perduto ed è stato pubblicato solo nel 2018 dalla Nave di Teseo. La regista Elisabetta Sgarbi lo ambienta alla fine degli anni Sessanta, in un modo più crudele che echeggia i noir che a Scerbanenco hanno dato la fama. L’incontro tra una giovane coppia di ladri e gli abitanti di una villa sperduta (un ex medico disilluso, un anziano direttore d’orchestra, una scrittrice stanca di scrivere romanzetti) diventa un “gruppo di famiglia in un interno” dove vengono alla luce sogni, illusioni, rancori e fallimenti. 

Regia di Elisabetta Sgarbi. Un film con Tommaso Ragno, Elena Radonicich, Renato Carpentieri, Michela Cescon, Mimmo Borrelli. Uscita cinema: giovedì 8 maggio 2025.

"L'isola degli idealisti" is a film based on the novel by Giorgio Scerbanenco, written in 1942 but lost and was only published in 2018 by Nave di Teseo. The director Elisabetta Sgarbi sets it at the end of the sixties, in a more cruel way that echoes the noir that gave Scerbanenco fame. The meeting between a young couple of thieves and the inhabitants of a remote villa (a disillusioned former doctor, an elderly conductor, a writer tired of writing novels) becomes a "family group in an interior" where dreams come to light, illusions, resentments and failures.

Directed by Elisabetta Sgarbi. A film with Tommaso Ragno, Elena Radonicich, Renato Carpentieri, Michela Cescon, Mimmo Borrelli. Film release on Thursday, 8 May 2025.
