A CARNEVALE OGNI SCHERZO VALE During carnival, any prank is just fine.
It’s a time to enjoy oneself, get lost in celebration and forget about the pressures of everyday life. This can be seen in one of the most popular Italian expressions about carnival. ‘A carnevale ogni scherzo vale’ means that during carnival, anything goes. Any fun practical joke or prank during carnival season is just fine.

| | | | DID YOU KNOW? The Carnival is held this year in Italy from January 30 to February 16, 2021. These festivities have always been associated with food and in particular with pastries which are so delicious they are celebrated around the world. Simple and gourmet, the desserts of the Italian Carnival have centuries of history and are made with ingredients that can easily be found in pantries such as flour, milk, sugar, butter, eggs and olive oil. Carnival is traditionally celebrated outdoors, which is why cakes are usually fried, so they are quick to bake and easy to eat on the street. There is a very wide variety of Carnival sweets specialties in Italy, often associated with the tradition of a region or territory. The chiacchiere are the iconic pastries, they are tasted all over the country and are known under different names and various forms depending on the region. The castagnole are also famous and are found mainly in the region of Rome. In central Italy, they make cicerchiata, small balls of fried dough assembled with honey. | The Italian movie Vermiglio is now in UK cinemas. Set in 1944, the story is about the arrival of Pietro in Vermiglio, a remote mountain village. And finally, watch out for a false friend. In Italian, confetti is not what you may think … ‘I confetti’ in Italian are sugared almond sweets we eat at weddings and christenings. Whereas ‘I coriandoli’ are coloured pieces of paper thrown in celebration, such as at carnival time. Don’t get these two mixed up!
